How to spot a fake watch on eBay
Most fakes give themselves away before you ever see the watch: the price, the seller and the listing tell you most of what you need. Here's what to check, and what Watch Value checks for you.
Red flags in the listing
- The price is too good. A genuine watch rarely sells 35% or more under the going rate. Fakes and scams are priced to look like the bargain of the year. We compare every listing with the same reference in the same condition and warn on anything 35%+ under.
- Words like "homage", "style", "inspired", "AAA", "1:1" or "replica". These aren't the real thing. We remove them, along with "custom", "aftermarket" and modified watches.
- A new seller, or very little feedback. A first listing that's a £10,000 watch is a classic scam pattern. We flag sellers with under 10 feedback or under 97% positive.
- Stock photos, or only the dial. Ask for photos of the case back, the reference and serial (between the lugs on Rolex and Tudor), the clasp, and the watch on a wrist with today's date.
- No Authenticity Guarantee. On eBay UK most watches over £1,500 qualify. If a listing at that price doesn't, ask why.
- Pressure to pay outside eBay. A bank transfer or a "friends and family" payment loses eBay's Money Back Guarantee. Never do it.
Red flags on the watch
- Printing and alignment. Genuine dials are crisp: blurry text, misaligned markers, a date that isn't centred in its window, or a cyclops lens that doesn't magnify the date 2.5x are warning signs.
- The movement and the feel. A ticking (rather than sweeping) seconds hand on an automatic, a light case, a rattly bezel or a weak clasp all point to a fake.
- Serials that don't match. The serial on the case must match the warranty card. Papers from another watch add nothing.
- Wrong details for the reference. Look up the reference in our reference lookup: size, material and bezel should all match.
If in doubt
Choose a listing with the Authenticity Guarantee, buy from an established dealer with a long feedback history, or have the watch checked by the brand or an independent watchmaker before the return window closes.
Questions
Are there fake watches on eBay?
Yes, though eBay removes many and its Authenticity Guarantee covers most watches over £1,500 on eBay UK. The risk is highest on cheap listings of popular references, new seller accounts and listings that avoid the guarantee.
What is eBay's Authenticity Guarantee?
For qualifying watches, the seller ships the watch to an independent authenticator, who checks it against the listing before it's sent on to you. If it fails, the sale is cancelled and you're refunded.
Does a box and papers prove a watch is genuine?
No. Boxes and papers are faked too, and genuine papers can be paired with the wrong watch. The serial on the card must match the case, and the dealer stamp and date should make sense.
What is a "homage" watch?
A watch made by another brand that copies the look of a famous model (for example a Submariner) without its name. Homages are legal and fine to buy, but aren't the real thing, so we filter them out.
